Export Market Development Grants
The Export Market Development Grants (EMDG) program now provides upfront funding certainty so you know how much you will receive during your grant agreement (2 or 3 years) so you can plan your promotional activities with confidence.
Small to medium enterprise (SME) exporters can apply for 3 different grants over 8 years (not necessarily consecutively) for eligible promotional activities.
Grants are available in 3 stages, called tiers. Each tier provides a different level of support for SMEs as they grow their export markets. The lengths of these grants reflect the different stages of an exporter’s journey.
Tier 1: Ready to export
- First time exporters
- 2 years and maximum $40,000 per financial year
Tier 2: Exporting and expanding
- For businesses who are exporting and
- Expanding export promotion activities
- 3 years and maximum $80,000 per financial year

Research and Development Tax Incentive
The Research and Development Tax Incentive (R&DTI) offers a tax offset for companies conducting eligible R&D activities. It encourages investment in R&D to help your company to grow and innovate which generates benefits for the Australian economy.
As well as providing financial support, the R&DTI can be an opportunity to collaborate with registered research service providers.
Turnover of less than $20 million
For R&D entities with aggregated turnover of less than $20 million, the refundable R&D tax offset is your corporate tax rate plus an 18.5% premium.
Turnover of $20 million or more
For R&D entities with aggregated turnover of $20 million or more, the non-refundable R&D tax offset is your corporate tax rate plus an incremental premium.

Entrepreneurs' Programme: Innovation Connections
Innovation Connections is a service under the AusIndustry Entrepreneurs' Programme that provides you with advice and funding to get research projects underway in your business.
Facilitation stage
Your facilitator will develop an Innovation Connections Roadmap, with recommendations and a plan for your research project. The roadmap will identify:
- business opportunities such as technology, information technology, new markets, advanced materials, testing and prototyping facilities
- critical research areas for improvement including products, processes or services
- strategic research opportunities into new or existing markets
- ways for your business to work with the research sector
- options to access science, technology, engineering and mathematics expertise, including by promoting research organisations’ work integrated learning initiatives..
Grant stage
To action the recommendations in your roadmap and get your research project started, you can apply for up to 3 different Innovation Connections grants. Your grants will reimburse you for up to 50% of the cost of your researcher placements, up to the maximum amount agreed:
- up to $50,000 for a researcher to develop and implement a new idea with commercial potential in your business
- up to $50,000 for one of your researchers to work in a publicly funded research organisation and access their research infrastructure
- up to $30,000 for the placement of a graduate or post graduate researcher within your business to collaborate on your project with a publicly funded research organisation.
You can only apply for a grant if your facilitator recommends it.
When you apply for the grant, you’ll need to fund the total cost of the project and researcher placements before being reimbursed, without using in-kind contributions or other government grants or programs.
Your facilitator will continue to provide support throughout the grant process, if needed.

Defence Cooperative Research Centres Program
The Defence Corporative Research Program (CRC) Program links industry with researchers to deliver game-changing Defence capabilities. Find out how to participate in a Defence CRC.
Defence CRCs aim to develop technologies that:
- improve Australia’s defence and national security capability
- address priorities under the Next Generation Technologies Fund.
Defence CRCs use program funding to partner with researchers and industry - particularly small to medium sized enterprises. Each Defence CRC develops project proposals based on its priorities. It then invites Defence CRC participants and other organisations to apply for each project.
Your organisation may also apply to participate in a Defence CRC when it forms or any time after.

Indigenous Business Australia
Indigenous Business Australia (IBA) can work with you to understand your business goals, develop your ideas and identify what type of support your business may need to remain successful. Our Business Support team can also link you to other networks and resources to get you information and support to help you hit your goals and provide access to an external business consultant to provide your business with the following types of specialised support.
Business finance
When you’re ready and have a solid business strategy and plan in place, IBA has a suite of financial products that can assist to make your business ideas become a reality. This could include access to:
- Start-Up Finance Package - designed to help new businesses get off the ground, this package can include up to 30% of a new business loan awarded as a grant. The loan amount can be up to $100,000 with a maximum loan term of 7 years, with low-interest rates and flexible terms. Loan repayments will be structured to suit the purpose and cash flow of the business. The grant component is available to cover capital expenditure items. This package is targeted specifically at small to medium start-ups that have been trading for less than 2 years and with less than $400,000 in annual turnover.
- Producer Offset Loan - designed to assist Aboriginal owned production companies to finance eligible Australian documentary, film or television projects. Provided to complement investment from Screen Australia, any state government film-funding agency or broadcaster. If you’re an Aboriginal producer or director, now your projects and stories can get the support they need.
- Business Loan Package - designed to assist you with working capital requirements, purchase of existing businesses, plant and equipment, and other commercial assets, so you can start planning your business future right now.
- Performance Bonds - if you are successful with a tender and the beneficiary requires you to provide a bank guarantee or bond for 5% or more of the value of the contract, IBA may able to either issue the bond directly to the beneficiary, or provide the funds to a bank to issue a bank guarantee on your behalf.
- Invoice Finance - invoice finance provides businesses with revolving cash flow based on the value of credit sales or major contracts. IBA can provide invoice finance to assist Aboriginal-owned businesses to take advantage of new contract or sales opportunities that may otherwise be out of reach.

If you’re a Territory business, start-up or entrepreneur with an innovative idea, you can apply for the Business Innovation Program (BIP).
The program aims to:
- support development and accelerate commercialisation of innovation in the Territory
- diversify the Territory’s Innovation Ecosystem, through new knowledge transfer into the Territory
- attract additional investment into innovation in the Territory.
The program offers:
- mentoring from an innovation advisor
- funding towards innovation development
- investment and networking opportunities to support Territory businesses to successfully develop and commercialise innovation.
The program is run in 3 stages:
- stage 1: planning
- stage 2: development
- stage 3: commercialisation.
You can receive up to $30,000 in government funding and $2,000 in advisory services from a pre-approved advisor.

Business Growth Program
Helping Territory businesses to grow, develop and expand.
The program helps businesses access professional services to improve their performance, sustainability and profitability. It also provides mentoring and coaching support.
Who can apply
You can apply if you are a small business with:
- an annual turnover of more than $75,000 and less than $10 million
- a Territory enterprise
- a valid Australian business number
- at least one full-time and no more than 20 full-time employees.
What you can get
You can apply for up to $10,000 based on a 50-50 co-contribution. The funding can be used for services in any of the following grant categories:
- strategy
- marketing
- operations
- financials
- people and culture.
Mentoring and coaching is also available after your business has completed one of the above grant categories.

Advanced Manufacturing Ecosystem Fund
The Advanced Manufacturing Ecosystem (AME) Fund of $7.5 million seeks to build the advanced manufacturing ecosystem in the Northern Territory. The fund aims to grow advanced manufacturing capabilities and increase investment in and output of advanced manufacturing activity in the Northern Territory, and grow the number of advanced manufacturing jobs located in the Northern Territory.
The AME fund will provide grants to industry led advanced manufacturing projects located in the Northern Territory across the Territory’s priority sectors where those projects:
- Commercialise new products and processes, including transitioning a new product or process from prototype stage to full commercial operations
- Support early stage, fast fail, grants to support small scale and pilot research projects in advanced manufacturing

CSIRO funding and programs
CSIRO programs connect Australian researchers, start-ups and small and medium sized enterprises with research, expertise and capabilities to develop new skills, products and services and accelerate growth.
Program categories include:

The program offers eligible businesses access to dollar-matched funding of $10,000 to $50,000 to undertake the following research activities with CSIRO:
- research into a new idea with commercial potential

Our experienced SME Connect team works alongside businesses to identify the relevant research capabilities best suited to their needs, and facilitates researcher introductions and project scoping. We also assist with the application process and maintain an end-to-end engagement with the businesses and researchers to ensure favourable outcomes for all parties.
CSIRO Kick-Start projects must be under 12 months in duration and businesses are required to make a cash contribution that matches the funding voucher.
