Young women are under-represented in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects and careers due to broad, complex and long-standing cultural issues including a lack of representation, women role models, cultural stereotyping and support. Only 17% of Australian IT and engineering university graduates are women which has a knock-on effect on representation in the tech industry.
To help combat this, Microsoft and the Geek Girl Academy have partnered to launch the Girl Geek Academy x Microsoft AI Series - a free, digital program to inspire and educate young women in years 7 to 10 to build STEM, coding and AI skills.
Workshops are taking place every Monday after school from 3:30pm to 5pm (ACST) from now until the end of June 2022.
Opportunities for girls
- Learn coding, technical and AI skills in a supportive and engaging environment led by Girl Geek Academy.
- Learn practical skills like creating your own website, creating a Chatbot, creating a face tracking app, drawing with code - and much more!
- Access to inspiring women models at Microsoft and Girl Geek Academy - opportunity to hear their career journeys and lessons learned.
All classes are beginner friendly, and are set up so you can go at your own pace - no need to worry about getting left behind. And if you’re tech talented, you can move ahead as fast as you like.
