Casuarina Senior College will soon have a new centre for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
The modern facilities will offer flexible learning spaces to maximise opportunities for various activities and student groups including a 'fab lab' featuring a digital printer and laser cutting machine, computer rooms, makerspace and workshop.
First stage works are due to be completed when students return to school in 2022; with works for stage two including adding an additional general learning area, refurbishment of the woodworking area, teachers preparation area and staff room and are expected to be finished by the start of term 2, 2022.
'The different areas - computer technology, fab lab, makerspace and light industrial spaces - allow a wide range of flexibility for use in all curriculum areas, providing the key to educating a new generation workforce, capable of dealing with complex issues and challenges.'
Casuarina Senior College Principal, Glenn Dixon
This follows the construction of similar STEM centres opened at Taminmin College in 2018 and Darwin High School in 2020. The opening of the new STEM centre at Casuarina Senior College, in addition to the existing centres at Taminmin College and Darwin High School brings the investment the Territory Government has made to STEM education in recent years to over $30 million.
'STEM education arms students with the ability to become critical, creative thinkers with the problem-solving skills that will prepare them for our increasingly digital future.'
Minister for Education, Lauren Moss
