Summary

In 2018 the Australian and Northern Territory government’s, and the City of Darwin came together, in consultation with the Darwin community to agree a 10-year plan for Darwin’s future - the Darwin City Deal.

Darwin City Deal

Since the Darwin City Deal was officially launched in 2018, the following commitments are currently in progress:

  • a new education and civic precinct: the CDU City Campus
  • redevelopment of the State Square 
  • innovations to cool and green the city
  • the establishment of the CSIRO-led ‘Urban Living Lab’
  • Activate Darwin: the revitalisation and activation of laneways and small streets to develop key points of interest, opportunities for small business and better connectivity in the city centre
  • introduction of smart technology, LED lighting, digital way-finding and promoting Darwin’s unique heritage and strong ancient culture to improve experiences for visitors to the city
  • outdoor dining and entertainment area expansion
  • planting of 12,000 cyclone resilient trees that provide shade to our public places and creating a city of colour.

Activate Darwin

Managed by the Department of the Chief Minister, the Activate Darwin team has recently launched a new Activate Darwin website which highlights Darwin city activations by the Territory Government, Darwin City Council, Darwin Waterfront, Cullen Bay, Tourism NT and Larrakia Nation.

Activate Darwin is working with the community to develop public spaces that reflect the diverse and unique nature of our residents, workers and visitors.

In late 2019 a public placemaking challenge was organised, encouraging groups and individuals to put forward their ideas for transforming public spaces in the city. With 95 individual submissions received, the public then voted for their top ten ideas to create vibrant public spaces across the city. Successful ideas included: lunch on the lawn, projections, plant towers, orchid roof installation, public walkways, and a swim-in movie theatre. Read more on transforming public spaces.

Outcomes

The Department of Industry, Tourism and Trade has additionally delivered its own city based activations in partnership with the City of Darwin and the Darwin Innovation Hub.

Innovation Playground

Delivered in Darwin on 26 June 2021 in partnership with the City of Darwin, the Innovation Playground was a festival-style attraction hosted at Civic Park on a Saturday and designed to excite young people into innovation and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) career pathways.

Eleven hundred and thirty-nine registered attendees participated in workshops and exhibitions which were showcased by 30 local industry businesses including but not limited to: robotics, drones, science, ag-tech, gaming, computer tech and 3D printing.

National Innovation Games

Launched on 22 March 2021 by the Hon Paul Kirby MLA, the NT series focussed on renewable energy and included three events (games), delivered virtually in April and May and in person at the Darwin Innovation Hub September 2021. Over fifty people attended the Darwin Innovation Hub in Darwin city to participate in the games which in total included 150 participants.
